“Sing to the LORD, all the world!
Worship the Lord with joy; come before him with happy songs”
The Jerusalem Marthoma Church Choir gives active leadership to the congregation for the regular Holy Communion services on all Sundays. Responsive readings and chants from the liturgy of the church is an indispensable part of worship. Use of music and musical instruments in the congregational response and singing make the Holy Qurbana and Divine services more attractive and devotional to the spiritual being. Above all, orderly church music enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the church and prepares the hearts and minds of believers for worship.
The Choir had its humble beginning when church members who had the talent of singing came together and sang Christmas Carols. In 1964 the church committee decided to have an organised group of singers formed as a choir. Under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Mathai, Vazheparambil the choir started assisting the regular worship services. This official choir conducted the Christmas Carols service for the first time in 1964. The choir sang four parts for the first time in 1968 under the leadership of Mr. Alex. U. Panampunnayil. Since its inception, choir is actively participating and assisting in all our main church services. Over the years, it has grown from strength to strength by the grace of the Almighty God, and all that we achieved is due to His abundant blessings, the sincere untiring efforts of the Choir master, and the dedication of every choir member.
The choir members share enthusiasm and a desire to make beautiful music as part of the worship service. The choir plays a key role in the regular church services, by leading the worship with chants, hymns and songs. The choir is ably led by our dedicated and inspiring choir leaders Mr. Gibu George and Mrs. Mercy Kurian. Our Organist Mr. V.C. Cherian leads the church services on the keyboard. The choir actively leads the congregation during the Passion-week worship services, especially on Maundy Thursday and on Good Friday, by singing meaningful hymns and songs relevant to the occasion. The choir also leads the congregation for special services, especially for marriages and funerals of our parishioners.
Regular Practices and Voice Training
The choir met for regular practices every Saturdays at 4.30 p.m. and on Sundays after the church service. Special practice sessions are held as deemed necessary by the Choir Master prior to the Christmas season and other special occasions. The practices which start with intensive voice training and breathing exercises, helped in improving the quality of singing during the worship services. We have the active participation of 67 choir members, including the choir leaders. The Choir leaders give special attention to train the small children.
Every year the choir conducts the Christmas Carol Service on 24th December 6.30.p.m. singing sweet melodious songs with a wide range of songs varying from traditional, contemporary, medley etc. The beautifully sung solos and duets are well appreciated. The Christmas Carol Service held on Christmas Eve every year is eagerly awaited by one and all.
The choir is giving a fixed amount every month as medical assistance and is providing educational aid to a deserving student in the church.
